"The America that I love, the America that I've sung to you about, that's been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration. ... (W)e ask all who believe in democracy and the best of our American experiment to rise with us, raise your voices, stand with us against authoritarianism and let freedom ring."

Contact Governor Sherrill about Delaney Hall
Script (revise as desired)
My name is (name) and I live in (town)
I’m calling as a concerned citizen to ask the governor to help the suffering captives at Delaney Hall as well as the peaceful protestors who’ve been assaulted and abused by ICE and state police. There are so many things she can do: enforce the Immigrant Trust Directive and Executive Order 12, follow through on the Safe Communities Act, secure pro bono legal representation for detainees, and more. Ultimately she needs to get Delaney shut down. Also please ask her to help free the protestors who are still detained. I know she’s been doing her best, but it’s not good enough. She promised to fight for her constituents. She needs to do so.
Thanks.

Background (5call.org)
The Trump administration has continually attacked immigrant communities across the country with aggressive ICE raids, abusive and inhumane detention facilities, and targeted attacks on cities and minority groups to create fear and silence opposition.
Detainees at ICE facilities have been subjected to inhumane conditions, abuse, and even CIA-style torture. 510 identifiable human rights violations have been reported, including sexual assault, medical negligence, and mistreatment of children and pregnant people. Detainees at Delaney Hall in Newark, a privately-run facility, are now on a hunger and labor strike in protest; congressional representatives and advocates were pepper sprayed while trying to investigate the conditions.
Children have been caught up in aggressive ICE raids, separated from their families, and detained in unsanitary detention centers where many have suffered from severe illnesses. ICE agents raided the Dilley detention camp in Texas to confiscate letters written by children detailing the horrific living conditions and abuse.
ICE agents have used indiscriminate violence against legal observers, peaceful protesters, and bystanders. In Minnesota, they murdered U.S. citizens Renee Nicole Good and Alex Jeffrey Pretti in broad daylight, while an off-duty ICE agent killed Keith Porter Jr. in Los Angeles. ICE leadership has dismissed these attacks as “self-defense” despite clear video evidence to the contrary, and the FBI has targeted the victims for investigation instead of the agents.
Trump has launched targeted attacks on Democratic-led cities — Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte, and New Orleans — and on specific immigrant populations, like the Somali community in Minnesota.
The Trump administration has paused green cards and citizenship applications for people from 19 countries and has canceled citizenship ceremonies for immigrants around the country.
Hundreds of U.S. citizens have been wrongfully detained and mistreated by federal agents, often as a result of racial profiling.
ICE is using a number of privacy-violating surveillance tools and facial recognition spyware to hack phones, monitor a person’s social media, and use databases to profile and track individuals. Federal and local law enforcement has also used Flock Safety’s license plate tracking data to surveil protestors and immigrants.
These increasingly grotesque, coercive, and illegal policies are glaring indicators of rising authoritarianism in America. Demand your representatives push back against these escalating attacks on human rights.
Sample Script (Make it your own)
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from (TOWN).
I'm calling to demand that the Senator/Congressman oppose the partisan budget reconciliation bill that includes federal funding for Trump’s ballroom. This unnecessary vanity project would not improve the security or wellbeing of the American public, and funding would be better used to support government programs that do.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Background (5calls.org)
May 5, 2026: The Senate Judiciary and Homeland Security committees have released the proposed text of the Republican budget reconciliation bill. In addition to the over $70 billion for immigration enforcement, it includes $1 billion for “security” related features of Trump’s ballroom. While the text stipulates that the funds cannot be used for construction, this administration cannot be trusted to abide by that restriction. They have already claimed the entire purpose of the East Wing renovation is for “security.” The committees may do markups on the text to make changes during the week of May 11th before it goes to the full Senate for a vote.
In the midst of the longest partial government shutdown in American history, several republican lawmakers are prepping legislation to fund Trump’s new White House ballroom. A vanity project with no legitimate justification, Trump’s building of this extravagant and costly ballroom has led to the demolition of the White House’s historic East Wing in spite of a lack of congressional approval and a federal judge’s order to stop.
The ballroom has so far been funded by private sector “donations,” many of which are from billionaires and large corporations with contracts or other business with the government, leading many to suspect bribery and corruption. Moments after the alleged assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, Trump and his allies began vocally advocating for funding the unrelated ballroom and have since proposed adding this funding to the GOP’s party-line immigration enforcement bill to fund ICE and CBP. Others have proposed individual bills that will give $400 million of taxpayer money to fund the building of the ballroom, which initially was said to cost around $200 million.
With a nation in financial turmoil, there are countless programs to fund other than Trump’s vanity project. Tell your representatives to oppose the funding and construction of Trump’s ballroom and the unnecessary makeover of the White House.

Updates
February 28, 2026: The United States and Israel have launched “major combat operations” in Iran, reportedly killing Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Trump has again unilaterally engaged our military without the constitutionally required congressional authorization. Demand your representatives support the bipartisan war powers resolution to rein in Trump’s reckless use of our military.
February 19, 2026: The Trump administration has directed the U.S. military to prepare for potential strikes on Iran. It is unclear if or when Trump will unilaterally launch strikes to push toward a regime change. Representatives Khanna (D-CA) and Massie (R-KY) plan to force a House vote on their war powers resolution.
June 22, 2025: On the evening on June 21, Trump announced airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, pulling the United States into a conflict initiated by Israel without the Congressional authorization required for a declaration of war. Trump’s unconstitutional use of force endangers lives both abroad and domestically. Congress must do everything in their power to deescalate and block Trump’s warmongering.
On June 13th, Israel launched attacks on nuclear and military sites in Iran with a stated goal of stopping the expansion of their nuclear program. Iran then retaliated with attacks on Israeli sites, escalating the conflict, and the two countries have continued to trade military strikes since. Leaders of the Group of 7 (G7) nations, an informal bloc of industrialized democracies, were quick to call for a de-escalation during their summit in Canada, though Trump initially did not want to sign onto the statement. He has consistently made inflammatory and unverifiable statements to the press and on social media about the conflict: calling for the evacuation of Tehran, threatening Iranian leaders, and hinting at the U.S. joining Israel in their push for a regime change in Iran.
As Trump authorizes the military to shift aircraft and warships to the Middle East, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have raised alarms about the U.S. getting involved in this conflict. Members of both the House and Senate have introduced resolutions that invoke the 1973 War Powers Resolution and require congressional authorization or a declaration of war for U.S. forces to take action against Iran. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), who is leading the war powers resolution in the Senate, stated “The American people have no interest in sending service members to fight another forever war in the Middle East.”
U.S. involvement in this Iran-Israel conflict is painfully reminiscent of the 2003 Iraq War — questionable authorization, weapons of mass destruction misinformation, and goals of regime change. Congress must maintain its authority as a strong check on the executive branch and prevent the Trump administration from launching the U.S. into another endless war. Demand your representatives support a war powers resolution.
Check if your Senators or House Rep have signaled support by co-sponsoring the resolution:
House resolution: H.Con.Res. 38
Senate resolution: S.J.Res. 59
