Updates

October 27, 2025: The Trump administration is refusing to use $5 billion in contingency funds to continue SNAP benefits during the government shutdown, and the US Department of Agriculture has announced that federal food aid will not go out on November 1.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program provide essential food assistance to millions of vulnerable US residents. These programs not only fight hunger but also reduce child abuse and health care costs while improving recipients’ health. If Congressional Republicans continue the federal government shutdown into November, the 42 million people who rely on SNAP benefits and the nearly 7 million pregnant people, new parents, and infants and children who depend on WIC could lose these food supports.

SNAP benefits are currently funded through the end of October, but the US Department of Agriculture has warned states that there will be insufficient funding to continue SNAP benefit payments in November. Meanwhile, WIC is already running out of funds, with some states considering a pause on new applications and others using their own funds to cover gaps. The Trump administration’s temporary and dubiously legal measures to keep WIC afloat will not last long. Congress must act to end this shutdown and preserve food access for millions.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from (TOWN).

[IF CALLING REPUBLICAN]: I'm extremely concerned about the impact of the government shutdown on SNAP and WIC benefits for millions of Americans. I’m calling to ask that the (Congressman) immediately move to end this government shutdown by extending the ACA tax credits and blocking Trump’s illegal budget cuts. Prolonging this shutdown will cause untold suffering for millions of vulnerable people.

[IF CALLING DEMOCRAT]: I'm extremely concerned about the impact of the government shutdown on SNAP and WIC benefits for millions of Americans. I’m calling to urge the (Senator/Congressman) to demand the use of USDA contingency funds and any other available funding sources to keep these programs running while still holding firm against any federal budget deal that does not extend the ACA tax credits.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hi, I’m a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is _______.

[If Republican:]

I am absolutely furious that Speaker Johnson is keeping House Republicans on vacation—paid, I might add!—for another week while our healthcare premiums are about to explode and Adelita Grijalva still hasn’t been sworn in. This is not governance. It’s an absolute abdication of responsibility. Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the presidency. They need to come back to work, sit down with Democrats, and hammer out an agreement to permanently extend the ACA premium tax credits and reopen the government. This shutdown is highlighting how incompetent Republicans are and how little they care about people like me. It’s not a good look.

[If Dem:]

I’m calling to thank the Democrats for continuing to fight for affordable healthcare for their constituents. Please keep it up. We see what you’re doing and we’re grateful for it. Every single American who showed up at No Kings this weekend—plus tens of millions more—wants them to stay in this fight. Thank you! We’ve got your backs!

Hi, I’m a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is ______.

I’m calling in strong opposition to Senator Johnson’s Shutdown Fairness Act. While I very much want our servicemembers to be paid, this bill is not the way to go about it. It gives way too much power to Russel Vought to disburse funds where he wants during the shutdown and cut off departments and services with which he disagrees. It’s a formula for partisan punitiveness. Congress needs to get back to negotiations to reopen the government on a bipartisan, bicameral basis. And we want those ACA premium tax credits extended!

[If GOP add:] Does the Senator realize that without those extensions a family of four making $126,000 will see their average annual premium costs rise by $8,358? A 60-year-old couple making $82,000 will see their average annual premium costs rise by $18,361 to hit $25,331 annually. That is absolutely insane. We are running out of time. Extend the ACA tax credits now and reopen the government! Thanks.

Let Gov Murphy Know Your Opposition to the NESE Pipeline

BACKGROUND (Sierra Club, NJ Chapter)

Trenton, NJ - On July 16th, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) declared the Williams - Transco’s Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) Project land use application administratively complete. The application is posted online for public view here.

This dirty fossil-fuel project proposes:

  • Construction of a proposed new gas-powered compressor station (the most polluting type) in Franklin Township near Trap Rock Quarry.

  • 3.5 miles of new connecting pipeline through Old Bridge and Sayreville, referred to as the “Madison Loop,” which would cut through critical wetlands, several residential developments, Route 9 through Westminster Boulevard, the NJ Parkway in Sayreville, and underneath the NJ TRANSIT railroad.

  • 23 miles of new pipeline under the Raritan Bay/New York Harbor, which would dredge up thousands of tons of contaminated sediment and release toxins like arsenic, lead, and PCBs.

Municipal opposition against NESE is growing. So far, Keyport, Franklin, Matawan, Montgomery, Aberdeen, Union Beach, Highlands, Hazlet, and South Brunswick have passed resolutions opposing Williams Transco’s compressor and pipeline proposal.

Organizations fighting to stop this dirty gas project include the Sierra Club, NJ League of Conservations Voters, Food and Water Watch, Climate Revolution Action Network, Waterspirit, Surfrider Foundation, NY/NJ Baykeeper, NRDC, ReThink Energy NJ, Clean Ocean Action, among many more.

Governor Murphy – Be the Leader this Country Needs and SAY NO to Trump's dirty fossil fuel agenda!

The Williams/Transco Northeast Supply Enhancement Project (NESE) is not just a New Jersey issue—it’s a national test of climate leadership. The United States must urgently transition away from fossil fuels to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. You can set a powerful national precedent by rejecting the NESE pipeline project and standing up to the fossil fuel industry. This is a moment to lead boldly, protect our communities and environment, and accelerate the shift to a clean energy future. Thank you.
